Starting in 2006, Ridley Scott was set to direct the on-screen version of the downfall of Gucci, with Andrea Berloff writing the script, despite the Gucci family’s known disapproval. In this first iteration of the project, Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie were in the mix to play Maurizio Gucci and Patrizia Reggiani, respectively. In 2012, Scott’s daughter Jordan took the directing reins, lassoing Penélope Cruz to play Patrizia. When Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel their legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, d... Patrizia devises a plot to obtain controlling interest in Gucci by acquiring some of Aldo and Paolo's shares (the other 50%). She clashes with Aldo over the firm's clandestine sale of cheap "fake" Gucci products on the black market, and consults Giuseppina "Pina", a psychic, for guidance on how to manipulate Maurizio, who has little real interest in Gucci, into taking a more active role within the company.

In the second trailer for House of Gucci, viewers get a glimpse into Lady Gaga's portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani—and her doomed marriage to Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Clearly it would take acting royalty to portray a group of people considered royalty in the fashion industry and it looks like that is exactly what we are in for with the cast of House of Gucci, which hits theaters Wednesday, November 24, 2021. Arguably, his best work is when he is playing a villain, such as Scar in Disney’s original animated The Lion King in 1994, or as Hans Gruber’s brother, Simon, in Die Hard with a Vengeance the following year. Next on Irons’ agenda is a horror movie called Cello, and another biopic called Frankel about Sir Henry Cecil and his titular horse. Also known for making chart-topping hits with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, and starring in a few blockbusters (notably Suicide Squad as The Joker and the upcoming Morbius in the title role) is Jared Leto, who looks completely unrecognizable as Maurizio Gucci’s cousin, Paolo, in House of Gucci. A member of the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC), she regularly contributes to RogerEbert.com, Variety and Time Out New York, with bylines in Filmmaker Magazine, Film Journal International, Vulture, The Playlist and The Wrap, among other outlets.

Having since served on the boards of numerous other companies, De Sole currently lives in South Carolina. If the Gucci family era of ownership of the Gucci business might be seen as a “Game of Thrones”/”Succession”-style battle, the Italian-born, Harvard-educated attorney Domenico De Sole could be seen as the winner. Hired by Rodolfo Gucci after De Sole stood up to Aldo Gucci in a meeting, De Sole would rise to be CEO of Gucci America in 1984 and become CEO of Gucci Group from 1994 to 2004. When Lady Gaga shared a photo from the set of House of Gucci featuring her and Adam Driver, the Internet, understandably, went wild. From his cable-knit sweater to her jewelry-heavy, '80s-inspired look, the details were perfect, and buzz for the film immediately skyrocketed.
Storyline

The former Marine and former Girls cast member has worked with many other great filmmakers including Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), Joel and Ethan Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis), and Martin Scorsese (Silence), to name a few. Driver has been nominated for acting Oscars twice (first in 2019 for BlacKkKlansman, and then for Netflix’s Marriage Story the following year), but he is most famous, of course, for playing Kylo Ren in the Star Wars movies. Huston's previous film credits include supporting roles in American Hustle and Hail, Caesar! On the small screen he had a recurring role as Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire and a leading role in the fourth season of Fargo. Throughout his long career, Sir Ridley Scott has worked with some of the finest actors of all time – but even by his lofty standards, the cast for his new film House of Gucci is especially star-studded.

Among his many endeavors since leaving Gucci, Ford directed the Academy Award-nominated feature films “A Single Man” and “Nocturnal Animals.” In a recent interview with GQ, he spoke about the “House of Gucci” movie project. Hayek, who plays Auriemma in “House of Gucci,” is married to François-Henri Pinault, CEO of Kering, the luxury group that currently owns Gucci. According to a recent story in the Hollywood Reporter, it was Pinault who gave the production permission to use the Gucci name and access to the company’s archives. Long wanting to be a designer himself, Paolo endlessly fought to use his own name on products, attempting to leverage the Gucci branding for his own ends.

And while the film has already divided early audiences and critics, Gaga’s performance remains a highlight for many. Aldo Gucci’s nephew, Maurizio Gucci — who worked closely with his uncle in the U.S. market — described him as “a man of great vision,” following his death in 1990. This involved exiting duty-free shops around the world, which meant eliminating a portion of its revenue.

The company also focused on removing counterfeits and cheap quality products so that Gucci could reposition as a luxury brand. Patrizia Reggiani came from a humble background before her mother married transportation magnate Fernando Reggiani, which catapulted Reggiani into a life of being a socialite. Reggiani married Maurizio Gucci in 1972 and the couple had two daughters, Alessandra and Allegra. They became a notable and globally influential couple, splitting their time between Milan and New York, where they had an apartment in the Olympic Tower.

Known mainly as Pina, Auriemma was a self-styled psychic who was on Patrizia's payroll and became her close friend. (In later years, Auriemma has denied that she sold herself as a mystic – although this does not line up with media reports from the time). It can be slow going, but House of Gucci adds up to a fascinating story -- and Lady Gaga's performance is a knockout. Paulo Gucci, son of Aldo Gucci, did not inherit the Gucci taste in clothing or quality. Older than his cousin Maurizio, Paulo wants to be an artist, though he still holds shares in Gucci.
Aside from his family squabbles, Paolo Gucci was embroiled in other financial issues in his life. His ex-wife, Jenny Garwood, had sued him for allegedly failing to pay $505,600 in child support and he had a warrant out for his arrest for his questionable bankruptcy filing. Paolo Gucci also played a role in his father’s tax-evasion case, as he turned in information that implicated his father and led to his conviction. Aldo Gucci was also in embroiled in another public scandal in 1985 when the Gucci company sued him on charges of siphoning off millions of dollars. He was ousted from his role and his brother, Rodolfo Gucci, became chairman. Maurizio Gucci died in 1995 at the age of 46 after being shot outside his Milan office.
The award-winning actor plays Aldo Gucci, who was the eldest son of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci. Aldo introduces Patrizia to his eccentric son Paolo, who aspires to be a designer within Gucci despite his lack of talent. Aldo helps Maurizio and a terminally ill Rodolfo reconcile shortly before the latter's death. Rodolfo writes Maurizio back into his will but fails to sign the document attesting him the 50% interest in Gucci shares before he dies, so Patrizia forges Rodolfo's signature on Rodolfo's updated testament. Scott wanted to make a film about the Gucci dynasty after acquiring rights to Forden's book in the early 2000s. The project languished for several years, with a number of directors and rumored actors being considered before Scott and Gaga became officially attached in November 2019.
Spite and bad-blood brew amongst the clan throughout the story that spans three decades, especially after Patrizia sneakily talks Maurizio out of his law school dreams, muscles her way into the family business, and turns her husband against pretty much every member of the family. Through it all, Salma Hayek’s naive psychic Pina guides the increasingly distraught queen-bee Patrizia with prophecies about the future, lending the film some of its most hysterical scenes. Paolo Gucci, the son of Aldo Gucci, had a tumultuous history in the family business. His role was smaller than that of his father, uncle and cousin, but Paolo Gucci was instrumental in the Gucci company’s success in the late ’50s and early ’60s when he was chief designer. The youngest son of Guccio Gucci, Rodolfo Gucci was initially a film actor before joining the family business after WWII. His wife, actress Alessandra Winkelhausen Gucci, died at age 44 in 1954 when their son Maurizio was only 5 years old.
The Hadestown actor plays American fashion designer Tom Ford, who once served as the creative director at Gucci. With the help of hours of makeup, Leto’s transformation as Paolo makes the character an empathetic outsider, a dreamer who just wants permission to realize his off-kilter creative visions while tending to his pet pigeons. It was a “heartbreaking” performance, Q&A moderator Jenelle Riley said, a suggestion that was met with raucous applause. Paolo’s dreams are often put down by his father, fashion-house boss Aldo Gucci, played by Al Pacino in a performance met with similar affection by the audience. While he was involved with the family business, he was better known for his stage career.
House of Gucci vacillates between inspired camp and dour drama too often to pull off a confident runway strut, but Lady Gaga's note-perfect performance has a timeless style all its own. Pina becomes a close friend and astrologer to Patrizia Reggiani in the film. The two of them later go on a retreat of sorts together, and the film shows Pina helping Patrizia hire the hitmen that end up murdering her ex-husband.
The Killing Eve actress plays Italian interior designer Paola Franchi, who was dating Maurizio Gucci at the time of his death. The Marriage Story actor stars as Maurizio Gucci, the former head of the Gucci fashion house (and Patrizia's ex-husband) who was assassinated in March 1995. When Maurizio's business plans harm Gucci's firm, he seeks assistance from an equity company Investcorp, through which he hatches a scheme to acquire shares of the firm from the now-impoverished Paolo. As Aldo returns from prison and realizes what Paolo has done, Investcorp offers to buy him out, he refuses until Maurizio reveals himself as the deal's instigator, whereupon Aldo sells his shares and cuts contact with Maurizio. The screening, held at the brand-new 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater, was packed to its COVID-reduced capacity with SAG-AFTRA members and others, making it one of the first audiences to get a glimpse at the film that’s seemingly had awards buzz since it was announced. While Lady Gaga’s method turn has made headlines ahead of the film’s November 24 release (she said she spoke in her character’s Italian-accented English for nine months straight), it was Jared Leto who seemed to make the biggest impression on the Academy audience.
