The elegant lobby sets the tone for your Read House experience. Marble floors, the hotel’s original crystal chandeliers, and plush 1920s-style furniture make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The uniforms of the hotel personnel stay true to the period.

The Read House Hotel Review: Historic Luxury in the Heart of Chattanooga

The bed, linens, and pillows were comfortable, and I enjoyed the clean, elegant decor. The feeling of openness was nice, but I didn’t need all that room. I had a walk-in closet with storage drawers and two bathrobes. The closet lights automatically opened when I opened the doors. The premier rooms have more floor space and larger, black and white marble tiled bathrooms. The Manor House rooms are slightly less expensive than the Historic Tower rooms.

Must-Have Travel Gear

At our historic Chattanooga hotel, we specialize in 1920s splendor while catering to modern tastes. The Read House is a dazzling Jazz-era gem with the trappings of a new hotel. Our 241-room historic getaway boasts soaring lobby ceilings, dramatic chandeliers, checkered floors and gleaming wood-clad walls. In addition, at least 30 percent of workers have signed cards authorizing the U.A.W. to represent them at a Hyundai plant in Alabama and a Toyota plant in Missouri, according to the union. That is the minimum needed to force an election, though the union has yet to petition for one in either location.

Amenities

・The hotel's 1920s interior was luxurious.・The staff were very friendly.・The food at the restaurant was delicious. Jefferson Davis stayed at the Crutchfield House on January 21, 1861, while traveling home to Mississippi after resigning from the United States Senate. Legend has it that Room 311 is haunted by the spirit of Annalisa Netherly, who was allegedly beheaded in the bathtub by a jealous lover. Over the years, numerous guests have reported paranormal activity in the room. If you’re feeling brave, we invite you on a spine-tingling tour (offered by request). The Read House boasts nearly 200 years of fascinating history, from surviving The Civil War to hosting Elvis.

The Read House Hotel is the longest continuously operated hotel in the South—it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022. The story of The Read House parallels the history of Chattanooga itself. It holds within its glowing hallways and lush velvet-draped chambers the echoes of bygone eras, hushed murmurs of antebellum splendor, and echoes of post-war sorrow.

Indoor Pool

If you walk straight through the lobby, you’ll go into the newer section of the hotel, where the small fitness center and indoor pool are located. The hotel is gorgeous and we loved both the facilities and the location downtown. A draw when booking is the indoor heated pool advertised, however, it’s not very warm and much in need of a renovation. Compared to the lovely common spaces in this grand building, the pool area is quite shabby.

Final Thoughts – Should You Stay at The Read House?

Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is an 18-minute drive, and the Volkswagen of America Group headquarters is 22 minutes away. The Read House is a downtown Chattanooga landmark that has hosted many prominent politicians and celebrities since the current property opened in 1926. It’s near the city’s top attractions, and its spectacular Silver Ballroom is a local favorite for weddings and corporate events. Highlights of the hotel include a classy steak house and an on-site Starbucks. Its 241 rooms come with coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi.

It has endured floods, epidemics, the Great Depression, and an ever-changing Chattanooga. In 2018, the property completed a $25 million-dollar renovation that restored its original glitz and glamour. But the overwhelming win is a warning to nonunion manufacturers, said Marick Masters, a business professor at Wayne State University in Detroit who studies the union.

The hotel offers valet parking for $24 per day, which doesn’t include tipping the valet. There’s no dedicated free self-parking, although there are parking lots and garages all throughout downtown. Abundant natural light, Jazz-age furnishings and a queen-size bed make for a sublime escape. Premiere Queen Rooms also feature spacious custom bathrooms and modern in-room amenities. Premiere Double Queen rooms are welcome respites from the hustle and bustle. Each features two queen beds, glamorous black-and-white checkered bathrooms and plush bedding to unwind in ultimate comfort.

The Read House Hotel in Chattanooga is the oldest continually operated hotel in the South with a storied history nearly as long as its host city. The menu includes a selection of raw and chilled seafood, wet and dry-aged steaks, and other specialty dishes such as lamb, veal, and seafood. If you’re in the mood for dessert or an indulgent after-dinner drink, Bridgeman’s won’t let you down there.
